What is the Thrive Advanced Practitioner Apprenticeship?

The Thrive Advanced Practitioner Apprenticeship, delivered by Best Practice Network with Thrive Licensed Trainers, is an 18-month, work-based programme equivalent to a foundation degree.

Designed for teaching assistants (and those in similar classroom roles) looking to advance their careers, apprentices will be trained to plan, implement and adapt activities, collaborate with teachers, families and external agencies, and advocate for pupils’ needs so they can thrive both personally and academically within and beyond the classroom.

The content builds on skills and knowledge already acquired and is designed to amplify their impact on children and young people. It also boosts their credentials and qualifications - positioning them as a key champion for pupil wellbeing. 

Upon successful completion, apprentices will qualify as a Level 5 Specialist Teaching Assistant, an Advanced Thrive Practitioner and as a Family Thrive Course Leader. They will also be able to use post-nominal designations to demonstrate their commitment to professional standards and showcase their credentials and skills.

Frequently asked questions

Who is eligible for the apprenticeship?
This advanced programme is best suited to those who have previously trained as Thrive Licensed Practitioners (even if their licence has now expired). If you're just starting your career pathway with Thrive, the 3-month Thrive Licensed Practitioner course or the levy-funded 18-month Wellbeing Specialist Teaching Assistant Level 5 Apprenticeship would be a more appropriate place to start. 
To be eligible, candidates need to:
  • Be employed in a role working closely with children and young people in a classroom environment.
  • Have a minimum of one year's experience in a relevant role.
  • Have support from an employer and levy account holder.
  • Have held UK residency for at least three years.
  • Be based in England.
  • Have achieved GCSE grade 9-4 (A* - C) or equivalent in English and maths. If you haven't secured a grade 4 (C) or above in GCSE English and maths, you will be required to complete Functional Skills Level 2 in these areas. You will be fully supported by your tutors using a range of materials best suited to you.

Suitable job roles may include; teaching assistants, attendance mentors, behaviour leads, higher level teaching assistants, social and emotional wellbeing teaching assistants, specialist learning assistants, specialist learning support and other support roles in a classroom environment.

What are the employer responsibilities for this apprenticeship?

Employers will need to allow full-time apprentices six hours per week of off-the-job training. Part-time apprentices must allocate 20% of their working hours for this purpose.
Employers will also offer a mentor and facilitate the apprentice’s monthly virtual sessions and overall development.

How is the programme funded?

It’s fully funded for those working in local authority schools or those paying into the apprenticeship levy. For non-levy payers, the government offers co-funding, covering 95% of the cost, or levy transfers are available for additional support.

My licence has expired. Am I still eligible?

The apprenticeship is most appropriate for those who have previously trained as Thrive Licensed Practitioners. As long as you meet all the other eligibility criteria, even if your licence has expired, you are still welcome to apply for a place on the Thrive Advanced Practitioner Apprenticeship. As part of the application process, we'll ask how long ago you completed wellbeing training. This will help us ascertain whether any catch-up training will be required before you start the apprenticeship.
