Why are social and emotional skills important to children’s mental health and learning?

Social and emotional skills are crucial to children's mental health. These skills form the foundation of wellbeing in schools, affecting how young people think, feel, and behave. By enhancing resilience, decision-making, problem-solving, and relationships, and by forming secure attachments that help children and young people feel safe, they become more open to learning and thriving in the classroom. This leads to improved attendance, better behaviour, and higher attainment and contributes significantly to children's mental health in schools and beyond.

Is Thrive-Online suitable for children and young people with Special Education Needs?

Yes, Thrive uses a developmental model where children and young people are assessed based on where they are now, and what they need from you in the relationship and experiences.

With Thrive-Online, you can create action plans that address their needs based on their earlier experiences, providing you with targeted strategies and activities to support them.

How does Thrive-Online assist with improving behaviour in the classroom?

Thrive-Online assists with improving behaviour in the classroom in multiple ways. At its core, the Thrive Approach operates on the principle that every distressed or dysregulated behaviour in children indicates an unmet need. The priority is to address this underlying need rather than just the behaviour itself to see long-term impacts that have a positive effect on the children and young people. Thrive-Online supports educators in identifying and meeting these needs in a sensitive and meaningful way.

Firstly, Thrive-Online uses social and emotional assessments and action plans to enhance children's and young people's resilience, ability to form secure relationships, and emotional understanding. This helps them manage big emotions and conflict, positively impacting their behaviour.

Secondly, Thrive-Online provides dedicated 1:1 behaviour assessments and customised action plans. These plans include specific strategies to address behavioural issues, based on evidence-based behaviours that signal emotional tension and distress. When children feel threatened or unable to resolve an issue, this can result in disruptive behaviours such as aggression and agitation. The tailored behaviour strategies within Thrive-Online help educators support children in managing their emotions more effectively, leading to a more positive and productive classroom environment.

In what ways can Thrive-Online contribute to better mental health in schools?

Thrive-Online can significantly enhance mental health in schools by providing tools to assess and address the social and emotional needs of students. This proactive approach helps identify potential issues early and ensures that all pupils receive the necessary support, creating a healthy and supportive school environment.

By giving all pupils access to Thrive-Online, the platform ensures that no child or young person goes unnoticed. Comprehensive assessments identify needs across the entire student body, preventing anyone from slipping through the cracks.

Thrive-Online also identifies pupils who require additional support, allowing educators to provide targeted help. Students who struggle can be referred to a Thrive Licensed Practitioner, if available, or to external mental health services, ensuring they receive the assistance they need. This preventative, whole-school approach reduces the burden on teachers and classroom staff by equipping them with the tools to support students effectively. Additionally, Thrive-Online's detailed reports facilitate EHCP referrals, further aiding in the provision of necessary support, and provide evidence of your work to SLT and inspection teams.

What role does Thrive-Online play in enhancing school attendance?

Thrive-Online enhances school attendance by creating a supportive environment that addresses students' social and emotional needs. When students feel understood and supported, they are more likely to attend school regularly, leading to improved attendance rates.

Grounded in theories including neuroscience, attachment theory, and child development, Thrive-Online fosters a strong sense of belonging and secure attachments with educators. This supportive environment encourages students to feel more comfortable attending school. Additionally, Thrive-Online provides educators with the strategies to help pupils build resilience, understand their emotions and manage conflict with peers in healthy ways so they can navigate day-to-day school life.

The school and multi-site progress monitoring dashboards provide evidence of this by displaying social and emotional data alongside attendance data, allowing you to see the impact at a glance.

What kind of training and resources does Thrive-Online offer to educators?

Thrive-Online provides comprehensive training and resources for educators. This includes free introductory training on the theoretical framework of the Thrive Approach and how to use Thrive-Online. Educators also have access to an extensive Resource Library with
expert tips and advice, and can join regular Network Meetings on trending topics.

The platform features handy user guides, and there is a dedicated support phone line available Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm.

Additionally, educators can participate in drop-in Supervision Sessions with Thrive specialists for ongoing support.
